Dr Daryl Burdon BSc MSc PhD, Director

Daryl has over 22 years of experience in marine research, teaching and consultancy having previously been employed as the Senior Ecological Economist at the Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies at the University of Hull (2002-2019). Initially specialising in estuarine and marine biology, Daryl has broadened his research, teaching and consultancy expertise to include ecological economics, natural capital, ecosystem services, marine law and policy, ocean literacy and marine conservation and management. Daryl has a wealth of experience in managing and undertaking interdisciplinary projects, and has developed an international reputation for publishing and presenting his research. Daryl has secured research and consultancy funding from a range of public and private organisations, including the European Commission, UK Research Councils (e.g. Natural Environment Research Council), UK Government Departments (e.g. Defra), statutory agencies (e.g. Marine Management Organisation, Environment Agency), statutory nature conservation bodies (e.g. Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Natural England), charities (e.g. The Wildlife Trusts), industry (e.g. RWE npower, Northumbrian Water) and academia (e.g. Universities of Aberdeen and East Anglia). Daryl has enthusiasm for the student experience and teaching, having taught both undergraduate and postgraduate students and was recently awarded Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Nationally, Daryl is a member of Defra’s Marine Social Science Task Group, a JNCC Business Associate, Seafish Expert Panel and locally he is the Chair of the Humber Nature Forum.
